Typhoon Soudelor slammed the coast of southeast China on Saturday, leaving more than 1 million homes without power after killing at least six people in Taiwan. There were no immediate reports of mainland casualties or property damage.
Soudelor, later downgraded to a tropical storm, struck Putian, a city of nearly 450,000 residents, late Saturday. Chinese news reports said 158,000 local residents had earlier been evacuated to safety, as the storm moved toward the coast at 20 kilometers per hour. The typhoon was also expected to disrupt rail and air services across wide swaths of the coast.
Earlier Saturday, the storm swept across Taiwan with maximum sustained winds of about 160 kilometers an hour, leaving 3 million households without power and littering roadways with uprooted trees. More than 300 international and domestic flights were grounded.
